Wire Fraud in Austin Real Estate: How to Spot and Stop Scammers in 2025

Austin Realtor reviewing secure real estate documents

Imagine the excitement of closing day… then the crushing shock of realizing your down payment is gone. In Austin’s competitive real estate market, scammers are striking at the worst possible moment.  And, they’re getting smarter. I know because I caught one in the act just today.

A Scam in My Inbox

This morning I received an email that looked perfectly legitimate. Same branding. Same wording. But the account number was wrong, and the “link” they wanted me to click? That was the trap. I deleted it instantly and texted my clients to warn them to never click outside the secure portal from your title company. Sure, we’ve sent those instructions and so has the Title Company. But, a text the week of closing is a good reminder. It’s a safety net that we hold on behalf of our Clients.

The New Era of Real Estate Fraud

Wire fraud has evolved into a multi-billion-dollar problem. Criminals hack into transaction email threads, biding their time before inserting fake wiring instructions. Once the funds are sent, they disappear overseas and are unrecoverable.

Three Golden Rules to Protect Your Purchase

  1. Verify by Phone: Always call a verified number for wiring instructions.

  2. Use Secure Portals:  Your title company’s encrypted platform is your safest route.

  3. Trust Your Gut: Pause if something feels wrong. Even 30 seconds can save your purchase.

The Bottom Line for Austin Buyers

Austin’s real estate market is fast-moving and high-stakes, but safety can’t be rushed. Stay vigilant, ask questions, and keep communication open with your lender and Realtor.
