After Two Weeks on Foot, Sandy Creek Bridge Finally Reopens to Cars

Travis County opens a one-lane temporary bridge at Sandy Creek, reconnecting Lago Vista and Jonestown after major flood damage.
If you’re anywhere near Lago Vista or Jonestown... you don’t need a headline to tell you what’s been going on.
The Sandy Creek Bridge has been gone since that big Fourth of July storm rolled through. And with the rain almost every day since? It’s felt like the hits just keep coming.
For two weeks, neighbors have been walking across what used to be a safe, sturdy road. Carrying groceries. Helping each other with supplies. Doing their best, because they had no other choice.
But now, there’s finally a little relief.
Travis County has opened a temporary one-lane bridge across Sandy Creek. It’s not fancy. It’s not fast. But it means cars can pass again. Appointments, errands, emergencies, life … it’s all a little more reachable now.
If you’ve been living this, you know how much that matters.
If you’re reading this from a dry street in Austin, just know: this is still unfolding, just down the road. These communities are doing what they always do - showing up for each other. And right now, that’s what we all need to be doing.
Check in. Share a meal. Offer help. We’re all moving a little slower these days—and that’s okay.
