September is a great time to get out and about in Austin because the weather is finally starting to cool down after a long, hot summer. Fall is considered festival season in Texas, which means there are plenty of cool and interesting things to do in September in Austin.

Native Hostel
Billed as a “visual mixtape of space, time, and mind,” Museum of The Future Present is a limited engagement at Native Hostel. Explore music-based installments from famous creators like Hannibal Buress, Shabazz Palaces, Strangeloop, and more at one of the best things to do in September.

The Domain
The Domain gets a cherry on top with a limited engagement of NYC’s world-famous Museum of Ice Cream. The multi-sensory exhibit celebrates America’s favorite sweet treat and features a family-friendly Daytime showing and an adults-only Night at the Museum. Limited tickets for the exhibition are on sale now, but you can visit the cafe, bar, and gift shop for ice cream and boozy shakes for free!

The 2021 Central Texas State Fair takes place about an hour north of Austin and is well worth the drive. Enjoy four days of bull riding, fair food, family fun, and live music featuring Wade Bowen, Pat Green, Flatland Cavalry, and Aaron Watson, at one of the most iconic festivals in Texas, save the State Fair of Texas in Dallas.

Hartman Lawn at Long Center
A celebration of wine in Austin, Blended Festival features live performances by Kaskade, Nelly, and a fleet of other notable acts, plus a 100-foot wine tent, culinary stage, wellness lounge, and the Maxim VIP Village. Blended Festival is easily one of the best things to do in September.

Barton Creek Square
The grand return of the ATX Food Truck Festival is bound to be outstanding. Sample bites from dozens of top-notch food truck trucks while you shop local Austin goods. Legend has it that Aint No Thang But A Chicken Wang will be at this year’s festival, alongside other local heroes, so come on out and show local food trucks your love.
Austin Chronicle Hot Sauce Festival
September 12
The Far Out Lounge & Stage
The 31st iteration of Austin Chronicle’s annual Hot Sauce Festival kicks off in South Austin on a Sunday afternoon. Tickets are only $10, $5 of which will go directly to the Central Texas Food Bank. Sample hot sauces with flavors that aren’t so hot and others that will make you question your decisions. Hear live music from local Austin artists on the Far Out Lounge stage.

The highly anticipated Fall Pecan Street Festival is the largest free arts and crafts festival in Central Texas. Enjoy two whole days shopping over 300 national artisan vendors, chowing down on delicious food, and enjoying music from over 50 bands across three main stages. The festival is family-friendly and features plenty of exhilarating carnival rides and performances.

All Participating Austin Museums & Landmarks
The Austin Museum Partnership presents a whole day of free access to exhibitions and activities at participating local museums and cultural landmarks. Blanton Museum of Art, Bullock Texas State History Museum, LBJ Presidential Library, and Texas State Capitol are among the 40+ museums celebrating the best things to do in September.

10 Austin Venues
Experience four days of funny at the Moontower Comedy Festival, where you’ll laugh along to over 100 famous comedians across 10 iconic Austin venues. Alamo Drafthouse South Lamar
Fantastic Fest is not just for anybody—it’s an incredible and niche community of film lovers who enjoy horror, fantasy, sci-fi, and action movies. This year’s Post-Apocalyptic edition of Fantastic Fest focuses on the weird and wonderful with access to 80 feature-length films and 40 short films over the course of eight days.
